Politics: A double-edged sword that I hardly clean
Somehow, I forgot all the things I wanted to write. Fatigue is probably catching up on me.
Hate it that Im always feeling half dead but I probably have myself to blame for sleepin late. Was watching "The Arena" where secondary sch students from prestigious schools fight it out verbally. The motion of this episode was "Are Singaporean youths politically apathetic?"
Thats me... Personally I think Im not apathetic. Just that I have no time for politics, or maybe Im not giving it enough priority. However I am not apathetic. On a macro scale, I dun think that Singaporean youths are apathetic, despite the substantial lot. I feel that many of them just think there are better things to do, or are not giving voice to their stand. However looking at the education system changing in our country, I hope my prophecy of increasing participation will manifest.
Being aware of political happenings does not echo the notion that we are not apathetic. This is true, Im living proof. Knowledge will only turn into practical action when the need comes, which probably is not now. So what if I know Indonesia has banned its sand exports to us? Or that Thailand is unhappy over our acquisition of their telco? These matters are not volcanic enough for me to intervene with a letter or a visit to the Speakers' Corner. Moreover, what hairline chance do I have that someone will take my words for what they are? The risk of making a fool of themselves or unappreciated statements steers away potential thinktanks.
We are equipped to voice political views but looking at the stability we have, little people will probably find need to say much. Moreover there is a common paradigm that as long as our govt remains status quo, politics can be placed at the back of our mind. Also, we arent exactly brought up with an inquisitive, critical mind. I hope posterity will fare better, given all the enriching thinking exercises in schools and the advocating of political feedback now. There really is little point having so much brains without an avenue to effectively voice out views to a willing listener.

I believe that that singaporean youths turn to be more apathetic, it is due to our secure surrounding. I dont want to get into political issues here. But till this day, we are still living in a overly protected country. We have been restricted in many ways, but yet we are able to live in a safety and secure environment. Why blame on youths when we should look at the bigger picture that causes such a great change?

Ya I agree with u. We are looking at this world from an ivory tower. What a stupid phenomenon: We need less security to be less apathetic
