Happy Feet

Watched it with my cousins-cum-students yesterday. Wasn't as bad as some ppl said.. With reference from Chao Shun's blog, it is about social stereotypes. The penguin community seems like a village in the Dark Ages, where superstitions and stereotypes dominate the social paradigm. If u cant sing, u are hardly a penguin. And to make things worse, the protaganist is adept in tap-dancing instead of singing, making his community ostracise him due to his atypical behaviour. We can see society through the eyes of a social pariah here and it can be quite evocative and poignant.

Another issue addressed in "Happy Feet" will be the pollution and overfishing problem existent even in current times. Our lead decides to investigate the reason for a dearth in fish supply. Thanks to a twist of events, he manages to convince the human beings to stop fishing and polluting their habitat.

As a whole, this movie is more than just an eye-opener to society's viles; the intentions of the director are displayed in a light, entertaining mood to avoid didactism. And a different perspective is used. I can give it a 7.5 out of 10. (Somehow I cannot give it an 8 like Over the Hedge, probably because the humour factor is not strong )

  • I just thought it was such a tragic flick. Especially the part where Mumble swam all the way to the cities.. rather exaggerating.. but heart-breaking.. Maybe I'm biased. Though I'm very much into singing, the hidden issues were just too obvious for me to ignore.. glad u watched the show too..
